Defending "la patria, " or "homeland, " is the historical mission claimed by Latin American armed forces. For la Patria is a comprehensive narrative history of the military's political role in Latin America in national defense and security. Written by Latin American specialist Brian Loveman, For la Patria includes tables, maps, photographs, and a glossary that will assist readers in better understanding the military's intervention in politics in Latin America. This new volume provides a thorough and accessible history of Latin American armed forces and their actions in Latin American politics from colonial times to the present.

Now in its second edition, this history of South and Central America provides new coverage of twentieth-century developments in politics, diplomacy, and economics, as well as social and cultural life. A History of Latin America provides a vivid, analytical narrative illustrated with maps and photographs. Comprehensive in scope, the book describes the environment and peoples of the region before 1500 and the Iberian society that produced its conquerors. It also presents the story of Columbus' voyages and their aftermath and depicts the mature colonial societies of Spain and Portugal and their patterns of development in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For the second edition, the author has updated the final part of the book, which examines the origins and course of the movements for independence, the history of the new nations during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the effects of U.S. neo-colonialist tactics. The book also features additional illustrations covering the twentieth century, a new preface, and updates to the bibliography.
